Where to take it next

welsh landscape 2   Heinrich was fleeing with Emile. Wilhelm was escaping from the attack. Joseph and Hilmvich were corrupted to Khazar’s side and Valen had been slain before her story had even started.  My next question was where to take it next.

This was when my head started to paint pictures of the land that they lived in. It was a small Kingdom, Mariad, and ruled by a Lord who was letting the people down. Its a very small land (say half the size of Wales) surrounded by huge mountain ranges that cut it off from the rest of the world. They have a strong navy, that protects from invasion by sea to the south. I pictured the land where the characters are riding through as green patch worked fields but, to reflect the failures, the heavens opened and it began to rain.

I actually based the kingdom partially on China, or at least the concept that it is cut off from the rest of the world by the mountain ranges to the west and north. That ability of Imperial China to totally prevent outside influence was the thought that came to me for Mariad. Whether the demographics work or not I’m not sure but heh, its fiction.

There was starting to be a bit of friction between Joseph and Heinirch as the former caught up with the later. It was a friendship that was breaking down over their feelings for Emile, Joseph the lad’s lad who thinks he can simply win her over and Heinrich expressing feelings that he has had for many years. Lately, I’ve actually decided to expand on Heinrich’s emotions to make his character a bit more three dimensional. I’m planning to write a prologue with him viewing Emile and Wilhelm from the road and he works the land with Joseph. I’m not sure how I can make this a bit more exciting to grab the reader’s attention but something will come to me.
